August 27, 2008 VAALA’s 6th Annual Moon Festival Children’s Art Contest: Brings Together Aspiring Artists-in-the-Making. Download: Registration Form & Thi-Ve-The-Le-VN *Premiere sponsors: State Farm Insurance & Saving Call V247* WESTMINSTER, Calif.—The Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) will once again bring together the emerging artists’ of tomorrow at its 6th Annual Moon Festival Children’s Art Contest on Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 9:30am to 1:00pm at Nguoi Viet Community Room and VAALA Studio. On that day, more than 300 children ranging in ages from 5 to 15 years will be flexing their artistic muscles in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival, also known as Tết Trung Thu. All participants will create an original poster and submit their entry anonymously. Judging panel includes City of Garden Grove Mayor Bill Dalton, artists Rừng, Vi Lý, Việt Lê, and Uyên Huỳnh. The Children’s Art Contest, premiere sponsored by State Farm Insurance and Saving Call 247, displays the talents of all art-loving children, from the most miniature Picassos-in-training to anime-loving adolescents, and is a family friendly event for all. “The event is important because it brings our community together to celebrate our cultural traditions, creativity and our youth” said Julie Vo, Contest Co-Director. “Plus, everyone can appreciate color and artistry through the eyes of a child.” The event will close with an Awards Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 6pm – 8:30pm with a variety of performances that are open to the public. The scheduled lineup includes lion dancing, performances by the Lac Hong Performing Arts Group, short animation films, and a paper lantern march led by all participants. A panel of five judges will award First ($200), Second ($100) and Third ($50) Place winners, in addition to three Honorable Mentions ($25 each), for each age group. Awards are divided into four age groups: 5-7 years old; 8-10 years old; 11-12 years old; and, 13-15 years old. Mixed media art supplies will be provided and everyone who participates will receive a free Children’s Art Contest T-shirt and gift bag. All interested children must register by September 10, 2008.
