VAALA’s 7th Annual Moon Festival Children’s Art Contest

A weekend for families and young contestants to celebrate traditions together

In honor of the Moon Festival this year, the Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) will hold the 7th Annual Moon Festival Children’s Art Contest on Saturday, October 3rd at 9:30 a.m. at Nguoi Viet Community Room and VAALA Studio 14771-14772 Moran Street, Westminster, CA 92683. The Awards Ceremony will take place on the following day Sunday October 4th from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. The event is co-presented by Nguoi Viet Daily News and Viet Nam California Radio (VNCR).

By tradition, the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Tết Trung Thu) is an important festival for children to celebrate with their families and friends, where children march with their colorful star-shaped or animal-shaped lanterns, eat mooncakes, and watch lion dances. “We’d like to continue the Tết Trung Thu tradition here to bring families and friends together,” said Ysa Lê, VAALA’s Executive Director. “ “In the spirit of community and family, the art contest allows children to explore their creativity and have fun at the same time.”

Three hundred pre-registered participants will complete an original drawing using provided crayons, water color, and/or pencils at the event and submit it. A panel of judges will award First ($200), Second ($100), and Third Place ($50) prizes in addition to three Honorable Mentions ($25) for each age group. All children will receive a free Children’s Art Contest T-shirt and gift bag for participating.

The Awards Ceremony on the following day will feature an exciting program of music and dance performed by children. The finale will be a lion dance and a lantern march by all participants and their families. The Awards Ceremony will be hosted by the two young masters of ceremonies Kevin Phan and Beverly Bảo-Ngọc Phạm.
