VAALA Launches Free Puppetry Class Conducted by Trần Tường Nguyên

SANTA ANA – With the support of the Kenneth Picerne Foundation, the Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) will offer a Puppetry Class conducted by artist Trần Tường Nguyên (AKA De Hai Tran). The class is free and open to everyone in the community. The class will start on February 11, 2011 and be held every Friday from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. and every Sunday from 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. at VAALA Studio 14772 Moran Street, Westminster, CA 92683. To enroll, please call VAALA at (714) 893-6145. The class schedule may be flexible depending on the students’ availability.

A puppetry workshop will be held on Sunday, January 23rd, from 3:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. at VAALA Cultural Center, 1600 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, CA 92706. Admission to the workshop is free of charge. In this workshop, Trần Tường Nguyên will present the basic techniques of puppetry. The participants will have the opportunity for hands on experience with the puppets.

Trần Tường Nguyên attended the Saigon Conservatory in Vietnam and majored in Hát Bội and Theatre. He trained in the Puppets-in-Prague Program in Washington D.C. and under world-renowned mime artist Marcel Marceau in 2003. As an actor, stage director, and make-up artist, he collaborates on projects that include film and music productions.

Trần Tường Nguyên intends to promote creativity within the Vietnamese community and to help community members express themselves through the art of puppetry. “Puppetry is an ancient art of the world. It is an art that requires creativity and great imagination. I hope that through the class, the students will be able to share their own stories in a lively and creative way. Puppetry may help us discover the mysteries of life and ourselves.”

Students will learn puppetry techniques, create puppets, write short scripts, create costumes, practice vocalization, and how to use music for a puppet show. Students will participate in puppetry shows after six months of practice. The class will tentatively last for one year.

The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation is a social entrepreneurial operating foundation. The Foundation's mission is to develop innovative programs that promote human development. These programs provide unique opportunities for individuals to fulfill their potential. Through the Artist Outreach Project, the Foundation awards grants to accomplished visual, performing and literary artists, age 55 and older. Lớp Múa Rối Miễn Phí Do Nghệ Sĩ Trần Tường Nguyên Hướng Dẫn

SANTA ANA – Với sự bảo trợ của Kenneth Picerne Foundation, Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) sẽ tổ chức lớp dạy múa rối do nghệ sĩ Trần Tường Nguyễn hướng dẫn. Lớp hoàn toàn miễn phí. Trong buổi workshop này, nghệ sĩ Trần Tường Nguyên sẽ trình bày sơ lược về kỹ thuật múa rối và huấn luyện cho các học viên một số kỹ thuật căn bản.

Trần Tường Nguyên bắt đầu bước vào lãnh vực nghệ thuật khi ông theo học bộ môn Hát Bội tại trường Quốc Gia Âm Nhạc và Kịch Nghệ Saigon, và sau đó theo học ngành đạo diễn sân khấu và diễn xuất. Ông theo học nhiều khóa huấn luyện về bộ môn múa rối, đặc biệt là múa rối sử dụng dây qua chương trình “Puppets in Prague” (“Múa Rối Ở Tiệp Khắc”) được thực hiện tại Washington D.C. Ông cũng từng theo học kịch câm dưới sự hướng dẫn của nghệ sĩ Pháp nổi danh Marcel Marceau vào năm 2003.

“Múa rối là một loại nghệ thuật rất lâu đời của thế giới. Đây là một loại nghệ thuật trình diễn đòi hỏi sự sáng tạo, trí tưởng tượng cao,” nghệ sĩ Trần Tường Nguyên nói. “Tôi hy vọng là qua khóa học múa rối, các học viên có thể kể những câu chuyện của mình một cách sinh động và lôi cuốn. Nghệ thuật múa rối có thể giúp chúng ta khám phá những bí ẩn của cuộc sống và của chính mình.”

Học viên sẽ học các kỹ thuật căn bản của bộ môn múa rối, cách làm con rối, phục trang, luyện giọng, viết kịch bản, cách làm nhạc cho vở múa rối. Học viên sẽ dựng những vở múa rối ngắn. Sau sáu tháng, VAALA sẽ tổ chức một buổi trình diễn đầu tiên cho các học viên. Khóa học dự trù kéo dài một năm.
