Vietnamese International Film Festival 2011 Kicks Off with Party and Fundraiser

Film Festival’s final selection will be announced at its kick-off event featuring music entertainment, a showcase of movie trailers, and opportunity drawing and auction.

Fountain Valley, CA - The fifth Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF), the most anticipated cinematic event in the Vietnamese American community, will kick off its biennial celebration with a party and fundraising event. The kick-off party will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 from 7:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. at Access Media, 11101 Condor Avenue, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. The event will feature music, dance, and entertainment. A showcase of ViFF featured film trailers will also be presented that night. Singing sensation Tóc Tiên, the Freazy Band, and the UC Irvine Jodaiko are set to perform at the event. Saigon T.V. host Thanh Tâm emcees the event. Food and drinks will be served. Tickets may be purchased at the door: $10 (general), $7 (students with I.D.). Doors open at 7:00 p.m.

A press conference will be held at the event from 8:00pm-8:30pm to announce the official line up of the Vietnamese International Film Festival. Cinephiles may show their support by participating in chance drawing and auctions with great prizes to benefit the film festival.

ViFF will take place from April 7-10 & 14-17 at UC Irvine and Edwards University Cinema 6, both in Irvine, UCLA in Los Angeles, and Bowers Museum, Santa Ana. The film festival will present over 60 short and feature films from all over the world, including but not limited to Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Philippines, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.

The past decade has witnessed an increase in the number of films produced by Vietnamese filmmakers in Vietnam and within the Diaspora. Their work has become more diverse than ever and touches upon a wide range of themes and genres such as drama, action, comedy, and thrillers. This year’s festival theme, Reel Momentum, captures the momentum created by established as well as emerging filmmakers of Vietnamese descent around the world.

Co presented by the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association and UCLA’s Vietnamese Language and Culture, ViFF was established in October 2003 to showcase Vietnamese and Vietnamese Diasporic filmmakers. The mission of ViFF is to support, celebrate, and project a diversity of visions and voices from filmmakers of Vietnamese descent and films by, for, and about the Vietnamese people and culture.

Founded in 1991 by a group of Vietnamese American journalists, artists and friends, Vietnamese American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) is a community-based, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. VAALA has organized numerous cultural events such as art exhibitions, book fairs, book signings, recitals, plays, lectures, the biennial Vietnamese International Film Festival (ViFF), the biennial Cinema Symposium, the annual Children’s Moon Festival Art Contest and year-long art and music classes. VAALA recently developed smART Program, which offers free art workshops for non-profit youth organizations in the Orange County and Los Angeles areas.

VNLC (Vietnamese Language & Culture) was established in 1994 at UCLA to maintain and to share the Vietnamese language and culture on campus and for the off-campus community. Since its founding, VNLC has always maintained its objective to serve the community and to be the link between the UCLA community and the larger Vietnamese community in southern California through: Friday Vietnamese Language Tutorial at UCLA; Saturday Tutorial Projects every week at the Lac Hong Community Center in the San Fernando Valley; Rendering Encouragement in Academic Commitment for Higher Education (REACHE); Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Festival; and UCLA’s Annual Vietnamese New Year Festival (Tet Festival).

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA - Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF) sẽ mở màn bằng một buổi tiệc gây quỹ và họp báo trước khi đại hội chính thức bắt đầu vào tháng Tư. Buổi họp báo và tiệc gây quỹ sẽ được tổ chức vào Thứ Năm, 17 tháng 3, 2011 từ 7:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. tại Access Group Media, 11101 Condor Avenue, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. Buổi tiệc gây quỹ sẽ bao gồm trình diễn văn nghệ, chiếu trailers giới thiệu phim, và khiêu vũ. Ca sĩ Tóc Tiên, ban nhạc Freazy Band, và đoàn trống Nhật Bản UC Irvine Jokaido sẽ biểu diễn tại buổi tiệc. Thanh Tâm, xướng ngôn viên Saigon T.V. là M.C. của chương trình. Chủ đề của ViFF năm nay, Reel Momentum, diễn tả phần nào sự phát triển trong lãnh vực điện ảnh của đạo diễn người Việt hoặc gốc Việt trên toàn thế giới.

ViFF do hai tổ chức bất vụ lợi Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) và Vietnamese Lanuage & Culture (VNLC) thực hiện cách mỗi năm một lần từ năm 2003. Mục đích của Đại Hội Điện Ảnh Việt Nam Quốc Tế (ViFF) gồm hỗ trợ và quảng bá những tác phẩm của các đạo diễn người Việt hoặc gốc Việt Nam.

Về VAALA
Thành lập vào năm 1991 bởi một số nhà báo, nghệ sĩ và thân hữu, Hội Văn Học Nghệ Thuật Việt Mỹ (VAALA) là một tổ chức văn hóa bất vụ lợi. Về VNLC
VNLC (Vietnamese Language & Culture) được thành lập vào năm 1994 tại UCLA nhằm gìn giữ và chia sẻ tiếng Việt và văn hóa Việt trong khuôn viên đại học.
