Specifically, the work addresses the journey by those dispersed from Vietnam (the “Diaspora”) during and following the conflict from 1959 – 1975. The project is a direct result of the prestigious Princess Grace Foundation Special Project Grant, which premiered March 2010. Quiet Imprint was nominated by the Austin Critics Table for Best Choreographer and Best Ensemble. In response to audience and critical acclaim, Ballet Austin reprised Quiet Imprint for 4 encore performances the following October. In April 2011, the Vietnamese Science and Culture Association brought Quiet Imprint to the Vietnamese Community in Houston. This October, Ballet Austin II and Quiet Imprint will have their debut tour in Orange County at the Rose Center Theater. Quiet Imprint was inspired by, and grounded in, Vietnamese singer Khanh Ly’s soulful and transcendent performances of Trinh Cong Son’s music. The work depicts the arduous journey experienced by countless displaced Vietnamese men and women. A key component of the project was Dao’s open dialogue with Vietnamese elders to document their journey of exile, and then using these stories and the experience Dao created a choreographic narrative to recount their experiences through ballet. Ly has long captured the hearts of her audience by conveying the mournful, yet poetic lyrics expressed in Son’s music. The late Trinh Cong Son, who was an iconic figure known as the “Bob Dylan of Vietnam,” wrote many songs for Ly, his close friend and musical muse. For this production of Quiet Imprint, Ly will make another special appearance to perform live with Ballet Austin II for each of the performances. “We are honored to engage in this cultural experience that is directly reflective of such a rich part of the community we serve,” says Michelle Martin, Associate Artistic Director of Ballet Austin. According to the 2000 United States Census, Orange County is the densest populated area in the United States for people of Vietnamese descent. A 2009 Special Project Award given to Dao by the Princess Grace Foundation funded the Quiet Imprint project. The Princess Grace Foundation’s mission is to support emerging artists in theater, dance and film through the awarding of scholarships, apprenticeships and fellowships. This honorary grant is only available to past Princess Grace Award winners and Honoraria recipients for uniquely significant projects that advance their artistic development. In this, Dao’s fifth collaboration with Ballet Austin, the choreographer was in residence at Ballet Austin for 8 weeks, conducting movement workshops as well as interviewing Vietnamese expatriates who fled their homeland to make a new life in the United State. Dao was the Audience Choice winner of Ballet Austin’s first biennial New American Talent/Dance in 2006 About Thang Dao Thang Dao was born in Danang, Vietnam. He received his formal dance education from the Juilliard School and the Boston Conservatory, and he holds a BFA in dance from The Boston Conservatory and an MA from New York University. He danced for the Stephen Petronio Company from 2001-2006 and worked for the Metropolitan Opera and Little Orchestra Society. He was also the assistant to the choreographer for the Starlight Theater production of The King and I directed by Susan Kikuchi. Dao has presented his works in Boston, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, New York City, and Austin, with acclaimed reviews by The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and the Austin American- Statesman. His ballet Echoes has been touring with Ailey II for the past two years throughout the United States and Europe. Từ nhiều thập niên qua, nhiều thế hệ đã yêu mến tiếng hát Khánh Ly – tiếng hát chuyên chở thành công nhất những ca khúc mang giai điệu buồn với lời ca đậm chất thơ của Trịnh Công Sơn. ****** Về Thắng Đào Thắng Đào hiện là giám đốc của Thang Dao Dance Company (TDDC) ở New York City. Sau khi nhận giải thưởng Khán giả bình chọn cho tất cả bốn lần trình diễn tại giải dành cho biên đạo múa New American Talent/Dance của Ballet Austin, Thắng trở lại và sáng tác vở Printemps Perdu cho Ballet Austin II. Năm 2009, anh sáng tác một số chương trình mới dành cho Boston Conservatory (Nhạc viện Boston) và Medelssohn Violin Concerto cho Ballet Austin II. Thắng từng đoạt giải thưởng Pricess Grace Fellowship dành cho dự án đặc biệt. Anh đã sáng tác cho Ballet X, Ailey II, và Boston Dance Theater. Thắng Đào sinh tại Đà Nẵng, Việt Nam.
