Key to the kinship between painting and poetry is the interest in metaphors to convey abstract ideas and emotions—things that ordinary language cannot fully express. Marvelous Metaphors: Art as Visual Poetry was inspired by this figural instrument as it plays on words and images, while still allowing room for interpretation. No two people encountering the same poem or artwork will come away with the same reading. The 6 artists selected for this exhibition were very diverse: Trinh Mai, Christine Nguyen, Tammy Nguyen, Trinh Ponce, Dao Strom, and Van Tran. To read more about the exhibit, click here >>

In January 2009, curators Trâm Lê and Lan Dương organized an art exhibit called F.O.B. II: Art Speaks [Nghệ Thuật Lên Tiếng]. The exhibit, scheduled for January 9 to 18, was sponsored VAALA. Showcasing the work of over fifty visual and performance artists, F.O.B. II illuminated the diversity of political and aesthetic perspectives in the Vietnamese and diasporic artistic communities. The artworks dealt with sexuality, identity, refugee histories, and contemporary political issues like Obama’s presidency and Proposition 8 in California. To read more about the exhibit, click here >>
