The smART Program offers FREE, year-round art workshops in a variety of areas for organizations in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas serving underserved youth from all backgrounds. The objectives of the smART Program are to:
Invited artist instructors conduct workshops in areas which include but are not limited to filmmaking, claymation, painting, animation, drawing, arts and crafts, photography (film and digital), T-shirt making, poetry and spoken-word. Participating groups need to be a non-profit, Los Angeles or Orange County-based organization that serve children experiencing educational, socioeconomic, and/or physical needs. Participants’ ages range from 6 years to 18 years. Workshop capacity ranges from 10-25 people. Workshops last from two to eight hours per session and may be carried out in one or multiple sessions.
If you are from an interested youth organization, please fill out the application form. VAALA Staff will review your application and work with you to select and coordinate a workshop for the youth. In October 2014, VAALA held a smART workshop with the students from HAPI-YEP at Magnolia High School and photographer Hung Pham. Hung shared about the ABC's of Photography, levitation and hodouken photography. The students put concepts into practice with their own action shots! Youth in Motion: A Workshop for Emerging Filmmakers
Piloted in 2014 as part of its smART program series and in conjunction with its annual Viet Film Fest, Youth In Motion: A Workshop for Emerging Filmmakers is offered by VAALA to support young voices, stories, and perspectives in the Vietnamese community through the art of digital films. Workshop participants will explore and learn basic skills and tools for digital filmmaking and work collaboratively to produce short films that premiere at the annual Viet Film Fest. Participants have the opportunity to learn about the production process – from storytelling to camera work to editing – and put their skills to practice. Sessions include guest speakers from the local film community. The workshop is free and no previous experience in film is needed to participate.
